Holiday passengers face higher fares because of rising fuel prices, most families face holiday misery as most airlines increased fuel surcharges on their flights.
Virgin Atlantic was the first to increase it’s fuel surcharges and now British Airways has also announced that it is rising the fuel surcharges on all it’s flights. The second such increase within a month.
British Airways passengers will now have to pay £218 on top of the ticket price to cover the cost of fuel on it’s long-haul flights.
A number of airlines have increased the fuel surcharges in the past two months. Analysts predict more increases in the coming months and industry experts say that airlines are likely to seek costs from passengers, such as higher baggage fees.
Other airlines have cut back services to counteract the rising costs and some have gone out of business.
In America, airlines have tried to avoid rising ticket prices but have devised other means of extracting more cash from passengers.
America Airlines is to charge a one-way $15 fee for the first piece of luggage checked in, US Airways is charging another $30 for travellers who want a window seat, and Jet Blue is adding a $10-$20 fee if passengers require extra leg room.
So is this the end of the era of cheap air travel? As airlines keep increasing the cost of air travel, probably holidaymakers could look at holidays closer to home.
