Thomas Cook plans to beat fuel hikes

Thomas Cook is experimenting with a new service that let customers gamble on fuel prices when they are booking their holidays. The holiday and travel company is trialing the service in Belgium. Customers can buy protection against paying retrospective fuel surcharges.

The scheme, introduced with the support of the Belgium government came after fuel hikes left some travellers paying surcharges of up to £117. Air travellers can buy protection from supplements at 13 Euros for a short haul flight, 20 Euro for a medium haul and 40 Euro for long haul flights. The fuel surcharge protection is capped to ensure air travellers do not lose money on the scheme.

The fuel surcharge protection fee will add an extra cost on travel costs is it really necessary and is it going help air travellers? Feel free to share your views by posting your comments.
