Traffic for London is increasing the penalty fare from £30 to £50 from 11 January 2009. The penalty for non-payment when using London public transport is being increased to combat fare evasion which London Mayor, Boris Johnson says, costs Londoners £70millions a year.
“We are investing record amounts in renewing the network and it is only fair that those who travel on the Tube or bus pay their way. These changes to penalty fares will provide a greater deterrent to those who would otherwise try to short-change London” says Traffic for London.
Transport fares in London are a bit too high and sometimes you get tempted to try your lucky but it’s only one day you get caught. I however feel Traffic for London should not keep on increasing fares like they have been doing over the years. When service is not improving.
The simple way to avoid the penalty fare is to ensure you pay the correct fare for your journey, £50 is a lot of money and on top of that a possible criminal record.
Is it worth it?
