Airport owner BAA has launched an ambitious campaign for a third runway at Heathrow airport and a high speed rail network across the UK. A decision by the government on the third runway is expected next month. But is seems there is trouble ahead for BAA.
BAA fears environmental and financial concerns might see ministers back away from the expansion project. The government may support allowing more flights from the existing runways.
But there could be more trouble for BAA from environmental campaigners and residents from the nearby areas who will have to live with more noise from the increased traffic in the area.
But, how will BAA cope with the increased number of flights as demand for air travel increases? Is BAA’s action a purely business decision or there is genuine need for a third runway?
