After the collapse of the XL airline and the recent troubles in the airline industry with a number of airlines going burst, it is now time to be more careful who you make your bookings with. A few more airlines are also said to be in trouble because of the rising fuel costs and the current credit crunch.
From the problems that holidaymakers are facing, it just shows how important it is to check if the company you are booking with is ATOL protected and if possible pay by credit card.
After the collapse of XL Leisure Group 85 000 holidaymakers are said to be stranded abroad, 200 000 more are said to be stranded abroad, 1 700 employees have lost their jobs.
Customers of XL stranded abroad can call the following CAA helpline:+44 2891 856 547Those concerned about future bookings can call 0870 5900927. Alternatively, the CAA website, www.caa.co.uk has further information.
Here is some information that can help holidaymakers affected by the collapse of XL Leisure Group:
If you booked an XL holiday, or a flight with Freedom Flights, you will get your money back by claiming a refund from ATOL. Ask your travel agent for help with this.ATOL should also help those with flights only.
If your flight is not covered by the ATOL arrangements you are advised to try to get your money back by contacting your credit card company (if you paid by credit card).
If you paid by debit card you have less chance of getting a refund – it will depend on whether your bank is willing to pursue XL’s bank.
Check your insurance policy. Unfortunately the chances are that the failure of an airline or holiday company will NOT be covered but a few people may strike lucky.
So sad that holidaymakers are going to lose out after working so hard to save for the holidays in these difficult times. Good luck luck to all those forced to make new travel arrangements after the collapse of XL leisure Group.
